Salesian Bethlehem

The ‘Sacred Heart Church’ situated at Bethlehem, looms over the Jordan valley, with its peculiar artistic appeal. The church was built in 1902 by the Salesians and later dedicated it to the Sacred heart of Jesus, as the Salesian spirituality looks at the heart of Jesus with meekness and humility and attends to the call of Jesus, ‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Mt 11: 28). The church is built in gothic style, and the structure is simple. The acoustics is really a treat to the ears as the music and voice, re-echoes.

Being a ‘public’ church, the holy mass is celebrated on every Sunday at 8.30 am, in Arabic language. About 80 to 100 followers attend the mass every Sunday. Following the liturgical calendar of Jerusalem Patriarchate, various liturgical feasts are celebrated: Christmas, Epiphany, way of the cross on every Friday during the season of lent, which includes also a way of the cross organized in procession around various parts of Bethlehem. The feast of Sacred Heart of Jesus which falls on the first Friday of June is well solemnized by Eucharistic celebration presided by the Patriarch and followed by a well-organized, prayerful procession into the city of Bethlehem.

Apart from that, various groups and movements do book their masses here. The Salesian community is ready to offer masses in Arabic, English, Italian, Spanish, French, Tamil, and in Vietnamese. The masses can be booked, contacting us through email and through telephone.
